Renault is pooling its electric vehicle activities into the new subsidiary Ampere, with the aim of reducing list prices for electric vehicles by 40 percent. The product range will include the compact car Legend, priced at less than 20,000 euros, designed for urban commuting with a consumption rate of only 10 kWh per 100 km. Further details are not available at this time.
There are currently few electric cars from European manufacturers in this price range. VW has also announced an electric car priced around 20,000 euros starting in 2025.
Ampere is set to drive Renault’s electric offensive. The goal is to sell 300,000 electric vehicles by 2025, with the number increasing to one million vehicles by 2031, representing half of Renault’s total car production.
In addition to the Legend, the R5 E-Tech is planned for 2023, visually reminiscent of the compact cars from the 70s and 80s. In 2024, the R4, an electric SUV, is set to follow. All three models will be developed by Ampere and marketed under the Renault brand.
Ampere has more than 11,000 employees, with one-third being engineers. Production takes place in existing factories in northern France.
According to reports, Renault’s electric vehicles are expected to be priced competitively with combustion engine models by 2027/2028. The product range is expected to encompass seven models for the core segments of the European market.
Financially, Ampere has ambitious goals. CFO Thierry Piéton cited an average annual revenue growth of 30 percent until 2031 as the target. With decreasing costs, the plan is to gradually improve profit margins. According to Piéton, Ampere is expected to be profitable by 2025, aiming for a revenue of over 25 billion euros by 2031.
