Customers in the US will soon be able to purchase Hyundai models online through Amazon starting in 2024. From browsing vehicle options to selecting and financing, the entire process will be digital, including the payment. Cars will be delivered to homes or made available at local dealerships, which will remain the official sellers.

Initially, a limited number of Hyundai models will be available next year, with other automakers expected to follow suit, as announced by Amazon.

According to a report from TechCrunch, reactions from car dealerships vary. Hyundai Santa Monica in Los Angeles reportedly welcomed the transparency and streamlining that Amazon could offer. However, industry experts cautioned that Amazon might aim to make car dealerships redundant. Presently, Amazon is positioning dealers as partners rather than competitors.

Alexa Integration in Hyundais

Amazon and Hyundai have also agreed that buyers of new vehicles from the Korean manufacturer can use Alexa in their cars starting in 2025. Users can ask Alexa to play music, set reminders, or control their smart homes – such as adjusting home settings remotely or checking if doors are locked while on the move. Drivers can also inquire about traffic updates and weather via Alexa. Some features even work offline, such as voice-controlled media players and navigation.

Author’s Perspective

Amazon is venturing into new territory by offering cars for purchase. Whether customers will trust the internet giant for such a complex and expensive purchase remains to be seen.

While Amazon excels in quick delivery and easy returns of goods, the test drive and personal consultation at dealerships are crucial for many car buyers. Amazon needs to clarify to potential car buyers how the online purchasing process will work alongside offline services like vehicle appraisal and trade-in of old cars.
